RARTEL was established in 1996 as a joint venture between the formerly called R.A. Radiocomunicaţii (now S.N Radiocomunicaţii S.A) and the Italian companies Telecom Italia SpA, Telespazio SpA and SIMEST SpA.
1998 was the beginning of its commercial activity under the operational coordination of its majority shareholder Telespazio SpA, and with the support of SN Radiocomunicaţii S.A.
Since 1998 RARTEL started to develop new services in the Cheia Satellite Communication Centre (pictured above and right), Prahova county, Romania, the national Romanian satellite ground station, setup in October 1976 and operated by the RARTEL's shareholder SN Radiocomunicaţii S.A.
Over the years, significant investments in the Cheia Satellite Communication Centre, the largest teleport in Central and South-Eastern Europe, allowed us to develop the infrastructure for in-orbit control services, VSAT Telecommunication services and Global Satellite mobile communication services.
Today, RARTEL is a reliable partner for Romanian and International customers, participating, in collaboration with other Telespazio Group companies, in major European projects. RARTEL also supplies engineering services that support international satellite programmes within the framework of Romanian participation to ESA and to other European Space Institutions.
